It has been a month since a new decade has started and the digital medium is churning out more engaging content with each passing day thanks to platforms like Netflix, Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video, Zee5, and more.
In 2019 we saw the legendary Game of Thrones come to an end after eight years, HBO releasing the award-winning limited series Chernobyl. Fleabag capturing hearts and awards with its exceptional story and fabulous actors, and Netflix giving us new seasons of The Crown and Stranger Things and coming out with The Witcher at the year-end.
While these shows were made for the global audience, the content was also created to specifically target the Indian audiences as well. Here is a list of some 15 upcoming web series of 2020.

Betaal – Netflix
Horror films and web series is not a new thing for the Indian audience. However, by far very few films and web series have managed to make a strong impression on the mass. The latest offering in this genre comes from Shah Rukh Khan’s production house Red Chilies Entertainment and has been named Betaal. From the trailer, it looks like a promising zombie horror series starring Aahana Kumra, Viineet Kumar, Jitendra Joshi, Suchitra Pillai among others. The story revolves around a group of army officials who now has to fight century-old British soldiers that have now turned zombies after unearthing an old curse.
Raktanchal – MX Original
This web series is based on true events that took place in Uttar Pradesh’s Purvanchal area in the 1980s. This crime-drama web series shows the rivalry between Vijay Singh (Kranti Prakash Jha) and Waseem Khan (Nikitan Dheer). In the 1980s a lot of state development work was taking place in Uttar Pradesh and the work was distributed through tenders. Waseem Khan, the tender mafia of the area is challenged by Vijay Singh, who is driven by vengeance.
Panchayat – Amazon Prime Video
Neena Gupta and Jitendra Kumar come together once again in Panchayat, a comedy web series. They were last seen together in the role of mother and son in Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan. Abhishek Tripathi (Jitendra Kumar) is an engineering graduate, who got a job in the Phulera panchayat office. The show also stars Chandan Roy, Raghubir Yadav, Faisal Malik among others.

Paatal Lok – Amazon Prime Video
Paatal Lok has created quite a stir of Dhartilok and has been the talk of the town for days. Produced by Anushka Sharma’s production house Clean Slate Films and directed by Prosit Roy and Avinash Arun, this gritty suspense thriller has been lauded for its powerful performances and intriguing storyline. Inspector Hathiram Chaudhary (Jaideep Ahlawat) is handed the biggest case of his career when an assassination attempt on prominent journalist Sanjeev Mehra (Neeraj Kabi) goes wrong. While Hathiram grabs the opportunity with both hands, not everyone around him shares the same enthusiasm in solving the case. The web series also stars Abhishek Banerjee, Gul Panag, Ishwak Singh, Swastika Mukherjee, and Rajesh Sharma among other talented actors.
Jamtara (Sabka Number Ayega) – Netflix
Haven’t we all heard stories of either our neighbours or relatives falling for credit and debit card scams? The latest original from Netflix, Jamtara, is a fictional representation of true-crime stories based on such stories.
This web series revolves around Rocky and Sunny, who run a successful phishing scam from their village Jamtara. When the news of their scams comes under the spotlight, Jamtara is thrown into the limelight along with these two ambitious yet volatile men. The web series is already on Netflix, so go and watch it today
Shukranu – Zee5
Releasing on February 14, 2020, on Zee5, Sukrana stars Shweta Basu Prasad, Sheetal Thakur, and Divyendu Sharma as the lead star cast. Sukranu is a comic take of the events that unfolded in India when people were forced to undergo sterilization.
The story revolves around Divyendu’s character who undergoes sterilisation under force. Much has been made out of the emergency period of India and the order for forceful sterilisation to be carried out. Let’s hope we are thankful for Sukranu and enjoy this upcoming web series.
Sex Education – Season 2 – Netflix
The second season of Sex Education on Netflix is hereafter the first season made waves worldwide in 2019. In the first season, the show explored the story of Otis and how he teamed up with Maeve, his classmate to open an undergoes sex clinic at their school. Season two will pick up from where season 1 ended. It will explore the aftermath of Otis opening the clinic, his and Maeve’s complicated relationship, and more.
Code M – Alt Balaji
Jennifer Winget is an established name in the Indian household thanks to her roles in the television dramas. This year she will be seen portraying the role of an Indian Army Lawyer on web series Code M. One of the most anticipated upcoming web series of this year, Code M will be aired on Alt Balaji and revolves around the character Winget plays. She is given the responsibility to investigate a case that will unwittingly bring out some uncomfortable facts into the light.
Breathe – Season 2 – Amazon Prime Video
The first season of Breathe has suspense and thrill integrated into every scene of the web series. Madhavan did a wonderful job in portraying his role and season two of this series will see Abhishek Bachchan making his debut in the digital space. Jr, Bachchan will hold the fort down with Saiyami Kher and will explore a whole new concept rather than being an extension of the previous one.
Mirzapur – Season 2 – Amazon Prime Video
After sweeping India off its feet in the first season, Mirzapur is back with the second instalment in 2020. The first season was lead Pankaj Tripathi along with Divyendu Sharma, Ali Fazal, Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi, Vikrant Massey, and Shriya Pilgaonkar.
One of the most awaited upcoming web series of 2020, Mirzapur season 1 told the story of how Mafia dons operated in the Purvanchal area of Uttar Pradesh.
The Family Man – Season 2 – Amazon Prime Video
One of the most awaited upcoming web series of 2020, the Family Man season 1 ended on a cliffhanger, keeping us all on the edge of our seats. The wait has finally come to an end with the second season releasing this year. The second season will see Samantha Akkineni making her debut on the digital platform. In an interview with the Indian Express, Manoj Bajpai, who plays the role of Srikant Tiwari, said that the second season will be bigger and better than the first season.
Made in Heaven – Season 2 – Amazon Prime Video
Made in Heaven wowed the audience with the honest portrayal of human nature underneath the garb of glitz, glamour, class, wealth, and education. After leaving the audiences hanging. Made in Heaven season 2 will be back on Amazon Prime Video this year. Co-creator Reema Kagti confirmed the second season on Instagram and the audience is eagerly waiting for the comeback of the dynamic weddings planners Karan and Tara with their team.
Dilli:
After two successful seasons of Sacred Games, Saif Ali Khan will now star in Dilli alongside Dimple Kapadia, Mohd Zeeshan Ayub, Sarah Jane Dias, and Sunil Grover. Amazon Prime Video has already shared snippets of ‘Dilli’ in a showreel that presented all the upcoming web series that will be releasing on its platform in 2020. Amazon Prime Video today shared a video reel of all the upcoming sequels of series and introduced several new series including ‘Dilli’, featuring Khan.
Four More Shots Please – Season 2 – Amazon Prime Video
Amazon Prime Video’s “Four More Shots Please” was an Indian take on the famous Sex and the City and this web series is all set to come out with a second season in 2020. Four More Shots Please starring Bani J, Sayani Gupta, Maanvi Gagroo, and Kriti Kulhari was first launched in 2019 and soon Amazon confirmed that there is a second season on the way. Apart from the four lead protagonists, two new faces will be joining the old cast of the show. Shibani Dandekar and Samir Kochhar will be joining the show as a new couple and have been quoted saying that they are excited to be a part of it.
