More than a decade ago, in 2007, Aamir Khan’s super hit movie Taare Zameen Par made the common citizens of India aware of the learning disorder called dyslexia. Prior to that revelation, most of us were unaware of this condition and the children suffering from it were regarded as truants not trying hard enough to read and learn at school.
Since then we have come far. However, even after 12 years, there are many who perceive the condition is an unfavorable light including our Prime Minister. This condition has not just affected regular people but also our celebrities, who have successfully overcome it to become the star they are today.
Famous celebrities with dyslexia in their lifetime
Hrithik Roshan:
He is considered the Indian Greek God with killer looks. Unfortunately, Hrithik Roshan suffered from dyslexia and did not have the smooth communication skills that we see today. He had to undergo an intense speech therapy session since the age of 6 to speak clearly and properly. With persistence, hard work, and determination, he gradually overcame dyslexia and went on to become one of the biggest Bollywood actors of India.
Abhishek Bachchan:
The fact that junior AB suffered from dyslexia was not known to anyone until Taare Zameen Par cited him as an example. He has successfully overcome the condition and went on to gain stardom later in his life.
Steven Spielberg:
Apart from our Indian celebrities, there are many well-known people from all over the world, who have battled dyslexia in their life. One of them is Steven Spielberg, the legendary director behind films like E.T., Jurassic Park, and Jaws. Surprisingly, Spielberg wasn’t diagnosed with dyslexia until his 60s. The school authorities perceived the director to be lazy, he was bullied and troubled at school. Maybe that’s why he focused on channeling his energies in making pathbreaking films like Goonies. When he found out that he was dyslexic he said that it was like “the last puzzle piece to a great mystery that I’ve kept to myself.”
Tom Cruise:
Anyone who knows about the Mission Impossible series is aware of Tom Cruise. The famous Hollywood actor who started off his career with films like “Top Gun” and “Risky Business”, was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 7. Since then he has struggled with academics until he joined the movie industry and went on to become a top star.
Steve Jobs:
Dyslexia is considered a neurological condition that affects the learning and reading abilities of an individual. The fact that this condition is a reading and learning disability did not deter Steve Jobs from founding Apple with Steve Wozniak is truly inspiring. Together, the partners built a computer in their dorm room and went on to found Apple in 1976 with a small seed capital of $1,300.
So, you can see not only the foreign actors or famous persons were dyslexic, but also some famous Indian personalities with learning disabilities had dyslexia issue in their earlier stage of life. But all of them have faced the challenges and overcome in their life.
